The chapter that I chose to read was Chapter 16: Music in Learning. I chose this one in part because the few activities that I have that involve music I really enjoy and the students do too. Also, I know that music can teach students a lot if used correctly and I was hoping to find out more ways to use it. While the chapter did not give specific ideas to try in the classroom it was still very interesting. It talks about the styles of music and when they should be used. It emphasizes how slow music should be used for reading times or other work times when I want concentration. It also offers up that music can be used as an energizer. My favorite part of the chapter was reading the samples that the author gave to start a collection. The music was more from my childhood so it was a fun list to look through although I wonder if my own students would be as excited about some of the choices.
One of the chapters I chose was Chapter 6: Taking care of Business. I picked it because the title really caught my eye the first time I glanced through the table of contents and all the bullet points sounded pretty interesting. I also liked the idea of thinking of teaching as a business. I think because many people in the business world look down on teachers, it was nice to read something that placed us on an equal playing field as doctors and lawyers. I also liked all the informative ideas about building positive parent relations. Since I am in the Spec Ed field, I have many of my children year after year. Strong parent relations are a must! Another statement that hit me was "Seeing yourself through your audiences eyes". It is a good perspective to take when planning, etc.
