One of my favorite things to do as an elementary teacher is to read to the kids. I really like to read stories with surprises in them and watch the kids light up as they suddenly understand the story. It makes teaching a lot of fun. Well, the group that I have this year is really into the stories I read. The other day they asked if I would finish the book that I was reading. I told them offhandedly that maybe, if they get in quickly and quietly from recess. What I didn’t expect is that they would take this very seriously. They lined up like they were in the military and went right to their desks without a sound. It was funny because I have some big talkers in my class. I ended up having to read for a little extra time to finish but I thought I had to under the circumstances. It also made me feel good that they enjoyed the story so much. It is a good feeling when they get so excited about something in school.

I am feeling so sad and heartbroken today and am truly questioning the "system". I had a meeting this morning about a child I see who is currently in the fourth grade. His parents feel that our school is not the best placement for him and want him placed in a self contained classroom for children with severe behavior problems. The issue is that this child does not have any behavior problems. Yet due to their continuous ranting and raving and calling meeting after meeting, our administration is caving and giving them what they want. What parent wants what is worst for their child? This child is a typical boy; in Cub Scouts, band and on an iceless hockey team. He is not disruptive to his class, has not been sent to the principal and has a group of friends he plays with. This poor child is about to be thrust into a class of kids whho are unsafe to themselfves and others all because his mother is a complete whacko! (In my opinion) These are the days my profession leaves me feeling sad and dejected.
