Reflections:
I think the role of schools today has changed a lot from the past. In the past it was to teach students certain knowledge to be successfull. Now that the world is changing at such a great pace the role has changed to teaching children how to learn and adapt. This will help them be able to change with the world around them.
Reactions:
I think as I read through the chapter there were some things that really popped out at me. The first was what a different world the students in my class are livving in than when I was in school. I think this shows the need for us as teachers to constantly be adapting as well. This is not an easy thing to do but necessary. I also can feel sometimes about how the joy of teaching can be washed away at times from the issues that face teachers now. I think it can be easy to get caught up in the politics of teaching and not enjoy the job we do. The focus should be on our teaching and the kids, not outside sources.
As far as practical applications, I think the most important thing for me as a third grade teacher to take away is the importance of technology. There is not a job out there that does not require some skill in technology today. At the same time I think it is sometimes overlooked in the classroom. I need to incorporate more of it to help my students in the future. I know that the technology I use today is obsolete tomorrow but it does give the students a starting point.
I think the overall thing to remember from the chapter is the world is constantly changing. As educators we need to change with it to be effective.
Reflection:
As a special educator I have the ability to see education through a different perspective. The role of school is continuously changing, especially with the NCLB Act/Law. Schools feel the pressure to provide the best education for all types of students. Because of this law our school had to get rid of our self contained classrooms for students with severe learning deficits and place these children in their grade appropriate regular education classroom with very little support. Needless to say teachers are frustrated, parents are frustrated and we as special education educators are frustrated. I can see why teachers are bitter and angry. How can you, as a teacher, be expected to do everything for everyone in 6 hours a day while meeting every child's individual educational needs, school and state curriculum demands, using the old deliver method with decreased educational funding? It definitely has taken a turn for the worst.
Reactions:
The topics in this chapter were not to new to me. I have recently taken two courses that addressed many of the issues described in the readings. It still is a bit discouraging to read and can make you feel like you are on a constant uphill battle at work. I think the most practical application is trying to stay up to date with technology and the trends of todays youth. If you don't know what kids are doing or what interest them, you will never reach them. What I am going to remember from this chapter is that there has been a large shift in priorities, in all aspects of our daily life, throughout our nation today. How we deal with the shift is the never ending question.
